02:07 pm - more later
Lots to update.....

but for now

Ask me 3 questions, no more no less. Ask me anything you want. Then post this on your own journal.

( obviously I await the question "what do you have to update?" with a sniper's gaze)

01:32 pm - winding down
Its been a tad busy of late and for the first time in ages i am really looking forward to taking time off.
This easter will be the first for a while with no LRP for me..Just have no enthusiasm for playing at the moment after last year.
But it means I get to look after Ryan while Sarah goes, so enthusiasm builds for "things" to do with Ryan...
I imagine a lot of trips or cinema or woods will feature...change as food ( i meant good) as a rest i think.
And of course i get to what new Dr who live for the first time in...yes, years

Have introduced Sarah to Dragon Age ..which unfortunately means my time to play it is much reduced..(Bahh!)
But am very impressed..easy to play..topnotch voices and script...really enjoyed it..and one i would genuinely fancy playing again as a different character

My only niggle...Tim Curry plays a villain but a restrained one who only really chews scenary right at the end of this particular story...which is fine..he does restrained well. But if you hire Tim Curry..is restrained the best use of his talents..? I dunno...

Have bought half a dozen Tim Powers books..which i am getting through. Anubis gates..still good but felt a bit rushed come the end.., Stranger Tides..Good..not what i expected and better paced for me.. Now onto Declare

Ryan is enjoying school..but i am stunnded at how quickly they are moving onto in reading. I do not know when i was little..but 5.5yr olds learning to spell "Because" and the like seems very early. Whic isn't a "oh look ryan is learning so fast" as its just the norm in his class which seemed surprising...

What is nice is that he now starts reading bits of his story books by himself ( how to train your dragon being a fav just now) and is very proud of this fact.

Sarah is succeeding in her diet..I am some 7 fold behind her weight loss...but will get there..eventually

so otherwise not much to report...beyond a general goodness occuring round our way

01:18 pm - Do sit down, Kermit. Shocks are so much better absorbed with the knees bent.
Of possible interest to some

02:29 pm - a year closer to death....
as my son would put it in his inimitable fashion.

So not a bad anniversary of arrival...bit slippy, went over twice, one a simple knee land, another a first-time ever legs shoot out from me, land slap on back and bottom and head...lie for a moment..get up and slip/slide onwards

Still work has not been bad...and take out curry beckons this evening..along with possible watching of Peter Davison Dr whoage...or maybe King Lear..or Possible Troughton WarGames..
I dunno

at any rate it will be warm and safe and happy..and those of you not in these states presently..i wish you a safe trip getting there asap

10:21 am - and things wind down....and up again
So whats the rumpus?

well work as a permanent employee started off very very busy ..probably becuase my teaching load is the highest due to various transitions between previous job and this one.
Not a huge problem and i am beginning to feel like a PROPER microbiologist..wider range of knowledge

Feel I have broken the back of the toughest level 2 module ( biochemistry and genetics) though enthusiasm, handouts and the use of narrated slides made available online
( and discovered that as well as a face fit for radio, i have a voice fit for braille)
that pithy comment only really makes sense if you read it, and then move on

Have to go to France early in the new year to see a students. Its a trip that I need to make and am happy to do so, but will endeavor to only have to visit UK based placements next year..
Less complicated

Ryan has started swimming, albeit 6-7 strokes, but only underwater. Much smiles and near " happy tears" when he suddenly showed us that.
He was a sheep this nativity.. He was a good sheep

2010 is going to be a lrp-lite year for me. The effort and money put into maelstrom did not result in that good a time being had...by this person
So I may well just secondary or something while i wait and see if crewing is possible

Which i will still be doing for EOS and that Harryhausen thing that seems to be popular...but not much of your actual playing next year i think
Never used to understand why people would work in GOD but having been a dogsbody there a couple of times, i can now see the attraction...must be my age i guess

ah well generally things are poddling along well...decorationsa re up...not one but two fibreoptics this year.....and Shhhhhh...a super secret set of "9" figures for Ryan.
Not that dad will be playing with them at all..no, no....

08:51 pm - Halloween pastiche

Was going to write a halloween tale based on lyrics but this side tracked me
30 minutes of writing, fairly crude pastiche, bad grammar and spelling with no rewrites
But its writing and that's what i am planning to work on from now on, actually writing stuff. For me
So happy halloween for tomorrow....I'll be watching this

While it is a nice night, it is the constant waiting that kills me.

Not literally, obviously, but it really does drag. The first few days I keep my eye on things, check movements, changes, nothing too arduous. They don’t really notice anything is up, not then. Of course some never notice but most do. Then they are told, gloatingly. Not always mind, but to be honest there is always this layer of smug, even under what often seems genuine sorrow, its still smug.

I won..you lost..Ha.

Faith manages.. it really does.

At first incredulity, then fear and its then I first have to do some work. A breath here, a nudge there and its done, no going back for the majority.

For most of them.

For most of them it’s a sprint finish then on in.

Panic, plead, threaten, panic is the usual.  Until I make my appearance and that’s that. All done bar the…well you know.

Most of them…

But then you get some, one or two now and again. The smart or lucky ones.

Then I get to wait, to work more. Its not that I mind, it’s nice, the visit, a chance to stretch my legs, see what’s changed, don’t get me wrong.

But it’s just, well I’m getting tired and they keep cheating and changing.

That one before last, talk about collateral damage, what a mess.

Still I’m just the end result, the full stop to a sentence of their design. Swapping and switching..I remember when we got a name and that was it..deal with the target..none of this follow the lady, keep your eye on ball.

But they do love their ritual, and well it amuses someone to give them this chance for escape.

Amuses one of THEM.

Well THEY never think of the legwork that some of us have to suffer. THEY just chortle at the panicked antics of the victims and then get pissed if it goes wrong. Like its my fault.

So the two possibles are both hidden away on this train. Quite a run to keep up, these modern conveniences, I really need to lose some weight if its going to be like this again. Least I’ve never had to follow a plane, now that would be something else. And it’ll happen, anything to stretch the run, last that bit longer. My, they run.

Right 5 minutes to go by my reckoning, and to be fair who is really going to check?

If you get away, you don’t notice because you live, and if not..well you don’t notice because well..

Damn its dark, and this smoke doesn’t help. Ironic I know, but it’s a pain in the eyes. Give me fire and brimstone over this hot steam.

Right gotcha..both of you out in the open. No need to appear just yet. Oh some running one after the other. Now have you got it or are you trying to?… Its hard when they are close …

Oh right gotcha, that’s a switch, ah well the biter bit..thats got you Mr K. I know some people who definitely want a word with you, its been a long run and you’ve had your fun. The kiddies will just have to find another clown magician.

Now where are those lovebirds…Oh there you are all happy and do I detect a smidge of smug. Good. You didn’t really count on a mother’s love did you. And mocking the séance didn’t help your chances either.

Cunning how few people check all the way down into an envelope.

And I don’t think anyone will mind if I make this a Him and Hers two for one.

Nice night for some..

07:46 pm - not an update
just been chatting for half and hour about "9" with Ryan.
Course should not have shown him the original short on youtube before he had to read his book, but luckily he read great with the promise of watching the trailer of the feature film
Ryan loves it

imdb has 2 trailers for the full film

10:48 am - wow another update ..movie
so back at work and pretty much back to working speed i think

unidentified foul smell outside the lab....no idea whats causing it..we suspect someone has gone on holiday and left food in their locker...Yeeeech!

anyhow, Movies

The Burrowers. Western/Horror with interesting creatures. Nicely paced, good mix of physical and CGI, nice performances, Clancy Brown good cinematogarphy...its a sepia toned western in appearance and pace....from a while ago Deadbirds was also a western horror which again i liked.

Let the Right One in.
Loved it.
A mix of brutality, delicacy, social comment, with so many things suggested not explicitly stated. Which is why any number of parts of the story are open to interpretation from people motives, the ending, why the mother and father of the hero separated, the relationship between the heroine and her companions.
Just a really enjoyable film that i will be watching again soon.

03:07 pm - more memeage
Don't take too long to think about it. 15 books you've read that will always stick with you. They don't have to be the greatest books you've ever read, just the ones that stick with you. First 15 you can recall in no more than 15 minutes.

1 Hyperion by Dan Simmons
2 'Salem's lot by Stephen King
3 The Brotherhood of the Rose by David Morrell
4 A Patchwork of Magic by Julia Day
5 Ghastly Grim and Gruesome  Editor Helen Hoke
6 The Ship of Adventure by Enid Blyton
7 Exquisite Corpse by Poppy Z Brite
8 Burning Bright by Jay Russell
9 The Anubis Gates by Tim Powers
10 Past Forgetting by Peter Cushing
11 For whom the bell tolls by Ernest Hemingway
12 The Hobbit by J R R Tolkien
13 Koko by Peter Straub
14 The killing kind by John Connolly
15 The Alienist by Caleb Carr

all good reads in my opnion , but also all relfecting something important to me, even if its just the first introduction to an author, or a feeling they invoke, or just a time place or memory of reading.
feel free to comment for specifics
